American Artist brings SquareRoot of Love: A WinePoetryFilm Project to Paris

Multi-media Artist John Sims, native from Detroit, is coming to Paris to present his Square Root of Love, a wine-poetry-film project, for Valentine’s Day weekend with a series of interdisciplinary events. This artist is no stranger to mixing things up. Some of his projects include hanging the Confederate flag from a noose in Gettysburg in 2004, making 13 mathematical art quilts with Amish quilters in 2013, and most recently organizing a performance of a mock wedding of Confederate and Union soldiers at City Hall, San Francisco.    

For the Paris event, the main element will be the introduction of a special wine project  produced in collaboration with Château La Grâce Fonrazade of St. Emilion ( Bordeaux region). The wine bottle features John Sims’ signature SquareRoot of Love image on the front label, which begs the question: what is the square root or simply the root of love?  On the back label is the artist’s original poem of the same name. There is also a QR code that links the reader to a short animation film based on the poem, which was featured at Martha's Vineyard Film Festival for Animation Shorts in 2013.  

To engage the themes of the Valentine’s holiday and beyond, the artist with his wine in tow will be hosting multiple wine tastings at L’Etiquette Wine Shop, screening SquareRoot of Love Film at Culture Rapide leading up to the Valentine’s Day in Paris: Love, Poetry and Wine event at the Berkeley Books in Paris. The artist has invited poets in Paris to come out and share their words and wisdom on Love in this time of great tension and political uncertainty. The artist has also arranged for some of these presented poems to be published in The Rumpus, a smart and hip online American literary platform.

1. A John Sims Talk featuring his most recent video poems will be held at Berkeley Books of Paris bookstore at 7.30 PM on Friday, February 10th, at 8 Rue Casimir Delavigne, www.berkeleybooksofparis.org

3. The SquareRoot of Love Wine will be featured at a tasting hosted at L’Etiquette Wine Shop on Monday and Tuesday, February 13th/14th at 3 PM, at 10 Rue du Bellay

5. Valentine’s Day in Paris: Love, Poetry and Wine will invite poets in Paris to come out and share their work about love and  This event will be at the Berkeley Books of Paris Bookstore, at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, February 14^th, at 8 Rue Casimir Delavigne

John Sims, a Detroit native, is a multi-media conceptual artist, writer and producer creating projects spanning the areas of mathematics, art, text, performance and media activism. L’artiste multimédia John Sims, originaire de Détroit, vient à Paris pour présenter sa Racine Carrée de L’Amour (SquareRoot of Love), un projet régenté par le vin, la poésie et la cinématographie, pour le week-end de la Saint-Valentin avec une série d’évènements interdisciplinaires. Cet artiste n’est pas étranger aux mélanges de choses. Certains de ses projets incluent la pendaison  d’un drapeau confédéré à Gettysburg en 2004, la réalisation de treize courtepointes artistiques autour des mathématiques avec des courtepointes d’Amish en 2013 et en organisant plus récemment une exécution d’un mariage simulé de soldats de confédérés et de l’Union à l’hôtel de ville, San Francisco.

Pour l’évènement de Paris, l’élément principal sera la présentation d’un projet de vin spécial produit en collaboration avec le Château La Grâce Fonrazade de Saint-Emilion (région de Bordeaux). La bouteille de vin présente la signature de John Sims, La Racine Carrée de L’Amour (SquareRoot of Love) sur l’étiquette de face, ce qui élude la question : qu’est-ce qu’est la racine carrée ou tout simplement la racine de l’amour ? Sur l’étiquette du dos se trouve un poème original du même nom écrit par l’artiste. Il y a aussi un code QR qui relie le lecteur à un court film d’animation basé sur le poème, qui a été présenté au Festival de films Martha Vineyard dans la catégorie des courtes animations en 2013.

Pour participer aux thèmes de la Saint Valentin et bien au-delà, l’artiste sera en ville avec son vin pour être l’hôte de multiples dégustations de vins à la cave à vins L’Etiquette, de la projection du film La Racine Carrée de L’Amour  à Culture Rapide jusqu’au jour de la Saint Valentin à Paris : un évènement sur l’amour, la poésie et le vin au Berkeley Books à Paris. L’artiste a invité les poètes de Paris à le rejoindre pour partager leurs paroles et leur sagesse sur le thème de l’Amour en cette période de grande tension et d’incertitude politique. L’artiste a également fait les arrangements pour que certains des poèmes qui seront présentés soient publiés sur The Rumpus, une plateforme littéraire américaine intelligente et en vogue.
