What is an ECU?

MIAMI, FL - 11/19/2015 (PRESS RELEASE JET) -- If you've had your vehicle for a few years, it might be time for an ECU upgrade - but before that, you might be wondering what it is and why it's so important.

ECU stands for "Engine Control Unit" (or, on some vehicles, it's the "Powertrain Control Unit" instead), an interior computer that regulates many of the functions of your vehicle. If you have a modern vehicle, chances are you already have one of these installed somewhere.

What do ECUs control?

"Everything" isn't much of an exaggeration. ECUs control things like:

Essentially, if there's a part of the vehicle that needs to be controlled, chances are the ECU is the part doing it.

Why Get an ECU Upgrade?

Like all computers, ECUs are constantly improving - new models are faster, more efficient, and better able to maximize the performance of your vehicle while reducing the amount of fuel you use. You may not even need to replace the ECU’s themselves- in some cases, the only upgrade needed is in the software.

Even a relatively small upgrade in the ECU can offer significant benefits from your vehicle - from better performance to higher mileage, just about everything you actually do with your vehicle can be done better.

Many vehicles improve so much that the better mileage actually ends up paying off the cost of the ECU - compare that to what any mechanic's shop would charge for a tune-up and you'll start to see just how valuable an ECU upgrade can be.
