TORRANCE, CA - 12/2/2015 (PRESS RELEASE JET) -- Convaid Products, Inc., a Torrance-based manufacturer of custom-made, compact-folding, lightweight, adaptive-assisted wheelchairs, expresses it deepest condolences to the families of victims of today’s shooting at the Inland Regional Center (IRC) in San Bernardino, Calif.
For the past 44 years, IRC has served more than 31,000 individuals with developmental disabilities in San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The facility is the largest of the regional centers in the State of California. It is a nonprofit, private community-based agency that promotes values of independence, inclusion and empowerment are the foundation that drives all staff in interactions, provisions of services, and program planning processes.
As a company in service to the same population sector with highly aligned values, Convaid reached out to IRC Executive Director, Lavinia Johnston, offering the resources at hand at Convaid to help during this tragic event.
As of this writing, police said today there were "confirmed fatalities" after multiple shooters allegedly opened fire at the facility. According to eyewitnesses and confirmed by police, multiple shooters entered the facility during a function there today and "just started shooting," according to Sgt. Vicki Cervantes of the San Bernardino Police.
The San Bernardino Sheriff's office was searching for one to three suspects, according to law enforcement officials.
“A tragedy of this magnitude is made only more horrific because it was clearly a premediated attack on helpless children and adults with special needs in the custody and care of those entrusted with their well-being. Convaid stands ready to support IRC and the families it serves within the full scope of its resources. Any child requiring a wheelchair due to this incident will be provided one free-of-charge by Convaid. We trust that law enforcement officials in San Bernardino, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies involved will quickly get to the bottom of this tragedy and bring those responsible to justice,” said Chris Braun, Convaid CEO.
Convaid mobility products are typically prescribed to children with mild to moderate physical and psychological involvement, many of which are addressed at IRC.
