TORRANCE, CA -12/4/2015 (PRESS RELEASE JET) -- Convaid Products, Inc., a Torrance-based manufacturer of custom-made, compact-folding, lightweight, adaptive-assisted wheelchairs, today endorsed a bipartisan Senate companion bill to HR-3229 to stop competitive bid pricing for Complex Rehab wheelchair accessories that was introduced earlier in the year. The bill number is S-2196 and the language is the same as HR-3229.
The bill was introduced by Senator Casey (D-PA) and he was joined in the introduction by Senators Portman (R-OH), Schumer (D-NY) and Cochran (R-MS). Three of these four bipartisan senators are on the Finance Committee.
“Convaid has been advocating both bills on an ad hoc basis throughout the year, however, with only a few weeks left to make a difference, we felt it was critical to yield as much visible support to both bills that are critical to the special needs community we serve,” said Convaid CEO, Chris Braun.
This legislation will affect 171 wheelchair accessories, such as those manufactured by Convaid and several other companies, reducing access to those who need them the most.
“There are only a few more weeks to reach out to lawmakers to urge them to take action. Already, eight national disability advocacy organizations have submitted letters to Congress in support of the legislation. Convaid urges you to visit the NCART website and use their resources to reach out to your local lawmakers before it is too late,” Braun said.
The Acess2crt.org website was created to share information regarding Complex Rehab Technology (CRT) and provide resources and tools to promote and protect access for people with disabilities. Links to documents that are ready to share can be accessed at www.access2crt.org. All letters have all been updated to incorporate the Senate bill.
Complex Rehab Technology includes medically necessary and individually configured manual and power wheelchairs, seating and positioning systems, and other adaptive equipment such as standing devices and gait trainers.
Convaid reiterates Access2CRT’s Call to Action:
1.) Visit the Access2CRT webpage: They have a webpage dedicated to this issue which provides access to helpful background documents you can use in your outreach as needed.
