The award ceremony of “27th Dr. Ibrahim Arikan MEF Educational Institutions Research Projects Competition”, which has been organized by MEF Education Institutions since 1991 in Istanbul, Turkey with the purpose of encouraging high schoolers to carry out scientific projects and which was for the first time this year mentioned with the name of the esteemed academician, Dr. Ibrahim Arikan, the founder of MEF Education Institutions, was held on Friday, 11th May, 2018 at Ulus Campus of MEF Schools with the participation of Erol Bilecik, Chairman of Board of Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD), as the guest of honour.
In the competition attended by Turkey as well as Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, France, Georgia, Croatia, England, Sweden, Switzerland, Montenegro, Macedonia, Malaysia, Poland, Russia, Slovakia and Slovenia, students coming from abroad also found the opportunity to experience the excitement and pride of representing their countries in the international arena.
This year, among the projects which were exhibited at MEF University for three days starting from 8th May, 2018 and presented to the public and the jury, the projects that drew the most attention were those regarding the topics of making life easier with data processing technologies, treatment techniques that are biologic and compatible with nature, new environmentally friendly therapeutic and healthcare supportive compounds, natural struggle with pests having effects on the economy, and the projects developed by high-schoolers by using microprocessor-supported control systems and measuring assemblies. In the competition in which 90 projects prepared by 152 students have been deemed worthy of exhibition as a result of a pre-evaluation, the common view of the jurors was that there were many projects offering scientific solutions to the current problems and which can be realized.
Also, it was observed that the students who participated in this year’s 27th competition, which was open to the participation of all the youth excluding students of MEF Schools, have quite comprehensive knowledge of the research subjects chosen by them and are able to build systems in accordance with their needs.
At the award ceremony of the competition in which 15 countries including Turkey have advanced to finals with 90 projects as a result of a pre-selection made amongst 766 projects in total from all around the World, Erol Bilecik, Chairman of Board of TUSIAD, in his remarks said: “Education remains one of the top key subjects at TUSIAD’s agenda since its foundation. To increase our competitiveness in the global business arena, we think, a well developed education system will be one of the most important metrics for our country’s development. We should be proud of MEF’s traditional science contest which accomplishes to gather many students from all over the world in a research and science focused organization which almost marks its 30th anniversary.”
Mr. Bilecik also added lessons for the young scientists of the future: “Dear young scientists, fellow students; even though this event may be called as a “contest”, in actual all of you, are winners here. I have a few key recommendations here for you: Do not forget that education and learning process never ends in life. Choose your specialty areas wisely and never just accept what is presented to you from previous generations, rather you should always strive to take things to next levels or steps further. Try to learn as much as possible about the different cultures and to appreciate the diversities in the global business. Remember, your experience in this journey will be one of the most important strengths in your future endeavors. Always have a vision, and take the effort to question, plan, and execute on your desires. Your attitude towards science will be rewarded by the developments in this field. Do not hesitate to fail, work hard, and set goals on a consistent basis, starting from today. You goals and targets should always aim higher.”
