The Second Devil in the White City? New Book of the Second Worlds Fair

William Hazelgroves new book could well be the follow up to Devil in the White City. Erik Larsons nonfiction tale of the Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago enthralled readers with the tale of a city straining itself to put on a fair marking Chicago arrival as a world class city complete with the first serial murder a Dr. Holmes. Forty years later Chicago did it again with the Worlds Fair of 1933 marking the cities one hundredth birthday and billed as a Century of Progress. The ties between the two fairs are strking. Dr. Holmes was the hellish side of the Columbian Exposition with Al Capone piling up the bodies for the Rainbow City as the colorful fair was dubbed. Both fairs were built against all odds with many doubting the fairs would come off at all. Author William Hazelgroves, Al Capone and the 1933 Worlds Fair might just be the follow up to the book that thrilled and informed readers ten years before.
Hazelgroves tale is one of a city under the thumb of Al Capone. The book opens with the St. Valentines Day Massacre and never lets up with the quest to get rid of Capone before the fair opens. The Worlds Fair is held during the worst year of the Great Depression and there is literally no money as Chicago is broke. Enter Rufus and Charles Dawes who figure a way to finance the fair through the selling of gold notes and getting corporations to put up the money for construciton. It is a story of overcomign seemingly impossible problems and then of course Capone is lurking in the background with the body count going ever higher until finally six millionaires band together to stop him.
Readers might see Al Capone and the 1933 Worlds Fair as the final chapter of The Columbian Exposition. Daniel Burnhams son is one of the architects of the 1933 fair with his father desiginging the 1893 fair. The book is due out in October from Rowman and Littlefield in hardcover. Readers of Larsons book should get ready to go back to a time when a Worlds Fair brought all the amazement of the early twentieth century to people who literally didnt have the nickel to get into the fair. It is a story of a city overcoming all odds to put on a show that nodody thought could be accomplished while a madman lurked in the background.
