United States, California, Redondo Beach - 11/10/2020 (PRESS RELEASE JET)
Dr. Michael Fulbright and one of his Give Back a Smile patients, Mercedes Williams-Brown, were featured in a Southbay magazine article to discuss how they were able to restore her teeth after years of physical abuse.
Redondo Beach, CA – The horrors of domestic violence affect millions of individuals. For those who are able to escape physical violence initiated by an intimate partner or others who are close to them, there can be lasting scars, both physical and emotional. In some cases, survivors of domestic abuse experience severe oral health problems and dental injuries that result from the assaults. Fortunately, charitable organizations such as Give Back a Smile, which connects survivors with skilled dentists who volunteer their services free-of-charge, offers help to these individuals as they navigate new paths to a better life. A recent issue of Southbay magazine profiled one of these brave survivors, Mercedes Williams-Brown, and talked with her dentist to explain how truly beneficial programs like Give Back a Smile can be. Dr. Michael Fulbright, a dentist in Redondo Beach and the head of Fulbright Cosmetic & Reconstructive Dentistry, helped Mercedes completely restore her oral and dental health to provide her with a beautiful new smile.
In the Southbay magazine feature, written by Laura L. Watts, Mercedes told the harrowing story of how she lost many of her teeth while suffering through years of being in an abusive relationship. As Mercedes began starting her life anew and building a career as a marriage and family therapist, she decided that she needed to fix the problems with her teeth. After she discovered the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s Give Back a Smile program, the organization put her in touch with Dr. Fulbright and a treatment plan was created. The Southbay article explains that Mercedes had a number of dental issues and oral health conditions that needed to be addressed. Dr. Fulbright developed a full mouth reconstruction plan designed to enhance Mercedes’ overall oral health and restore both the function and appearance of her teeth. Over the course of several appointments, Dr. Fulbright placed dental implants in areas of Mercedes’ mouth to serve as a foundation for an implant-supported denture, which is a custom denture secured by dental implants to provide stable, comfortable results that look and feel like natural teeth. Once the entire treatment program was complete, Mercedes said that she felt like a different person, and noted how much she appreciates both Dr. Fulbright and Give Back a Smile.
For his part, Dr. Fulbright highlighted how rewarding it is to be able to make a difference in someone’s life, particularly for strong, inspirational people like Mercedes. He has been an active volunteer with the Give Back a Smile program for many years, and has said that the ability to provide pro bono treatment to those who have suffered dental injuries due to domestic violence is one way he can utilize his expertise to give back to individuals in need. With programs such as Give Back a Smile, Dr. Fulbright hopes that survivors of domestic violence know that there are many people in the world who are ready to help them on their way to improved self-confidence and an exciting new life.
