Parallax Inc. commits free robots and training to 500 educators in 2018!

In a direct effort to equip students with electronics and coding skills, Parallax announced an entirely free Professional Development program for up to 500 teachers at 16 locations throughout the United States.

January 10, 2018 -  Rocklin, California - Parallax Inc. opened enrollment for 500 teachers in one-day “Robotics with Blockly” Professional Development courses around the country. Teachers from middle school through college—with no prior experience—will bring their computers and spend a day building and programming their own robot, and learning how to build electronic circuits with sensors and motors.

The Parallax Professional Development program provides educators the confidence and skills to implement STEM and robotics curricula in their own classrooms. The hands-on, immersive training is conducted in their community at their pace using a visual programming language based on Google’s Blockly, customized for a commercial microcontroller. Educators who have implemented Parallax’s program find that their students prefer learning to code with real robots and sensors.

“Parallax removed all the barriers teachers experience so they can quickly put robotics curriculum into their classrooms. The best way we can help the United States advance our engineering and manufacturing capability is with real-world tools and components instead of STEM learning ‘toys’, and we are leading the way. The educational and economic benefits to students are real—they will be exposed to the same systems used in aerospace, self-driving cars, entertainment, and computer-controlled manufacturing, learning about prototyping and engineering” says Ken Gracey of Parallax.

The Parallax effort is not purely commercial. The company founders grew a mid-80s personal computing hobby into an engineering business by creating the same tools they would have liked to use as students. Parallax has trained over 5,000 teachers and has placed over one million robots in schools.
