Panelists to share strategies to address opportunities for women in trucking industry

  COLLEGE PARK, GA - 05/03/2017 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

Attracting more women to trucking and logistics often starts with honoring the women who are paving the way.  The National Minority Trucking Association (NMTA) this week is hosting its first annual Top Women in Logistics Empowerment Conference on Friday, May 5 in metro Atlanta.  The conference is part of NMTA’s 3rd Annual Truckers’ Opportunity (TOP) Expo that will be held at the Cobb Galleria.

Women make up only 5-percent of the estimated 3.4 million truck drivers in the U.S. and women account for only 13-percent of transportation occupations nationally, according to industry reports. The conference is a free, one-day event that features some of the leading women in the trucking industry as speakers and panelists.  Registered attendees will learn strategies for success and tactics to overcome challenges facing women in transportation.

NMTA Chief Operating Officer, Charlotte Vaughn created the event to support women in the industry and to encourage more women to consider occupations in freight and logistics, which is a male-dominated industry.  “There are great opportunities for women in trucking and logistics,” said Vaughn.  “This women-only conference is an opportunity to explore innovative solutions to draw women and minorities to the industry through initiatives such as mentorship and continuing education programs,” she said.

The purpose of the TOP Women in Logistics Empowerment Conference is to create a global community of women that will inspire, encourage, guide and mentor women in one of the most powerful industries in the country.  This year’s conference speakers and panelists include some prominent women in US transportation and logistics:

  • Keynote speaker: Angelique Pierce, Daimler Trucks North America;
  • Panelist: Desurai Strickland, GMC Consultants;
  • Panelist: Angelica Garcia-Dunn, AIM Global Logistics;
  • Panelist: Elba Pareja-Gallagher, UPS; and
  • Moderator: Lisa Guadalupe Clarke, ALPFA Atlanta President
