ONE-DAY CONFERENCE EMPOWERS & EDUCATES CHILDREN, TEENS AND ADULTS WHO STUTTER

The National Stuttering Association, a non-profit organization headquartered in New York City, will be in Southern California for a one-day conference delivering empowering messages and educational topics designed for kids, tweens, teens and adults who stutter. The one-day conference will be held on Saturday, September 29, from 9:00AM-3:00PM. Conference attendees will hear from a total of seven speakers. Among them are 16-year-old Westlake High School freshman Cooper Clemons of Thousand Oaks, Calif., a member of the school's water polo and swim teams and the Associated Student Government, as well as Nathan Mallipeddi, a UCLA pre-med student majoring in biology and political science. The program will include discussions by parents for parents, and talks from speech-language pathologists, a counselor, and a therapist.

“Our goal is for those in the stuttering community to leave our conferences feeling empowered by those who have a similar life experience and see themselves in the guest speakers we have on the stage, so they too can realize they can achieve their dreams and goals and know that they have resources and a community that fully supports them,” said Executive Director Tammy Flores. Stuttering is defined as a communication disorder involving disruptions, or “disfluencies,” in a person’s speech, affecting over 3 million American adults today. The National Stuttering Association, originally named the National Stuttering Project, was founded in California by Bob Goldman and Michael Sugarman in 1977. The mission of the non-profit organization is dedicated to bringing hope and empowerment to children and adults who stutter, their families, and professionals through support, education, advocacy, and research.

Eight chapters represent the Southern California region. Orange County has chapters in Irvine and Fullerton, as well as a Family Chapter. The others are in San Diego, San Marino, Riverside, Santa Monica, and the San Fernando Valley. There are over 190 local support group chapters nationwide. The one-day conference is to be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 9:00AM-3:00PM at the Tustin Community Center at The Market Place, 2961 El Camino Real, Tustin, CA 92782.

Guests can register at WeStutter.org. Price for a single guest is $49.00. Family price is $69.00. Limited scholarships are available for financial need. Early registration is recommended.
