Betsy Blankenbaker, author of Autobiography of an Orgasm today confirmed that one of the key inspirations behind her journey of healing after sexual abuse was Eve Ensler’s work with The Vagina Monologues.

The author, whose books have received critical acclaim from women across the world also confirmed that she was working on launching a new solo stage show, called The O Diary, which is based on her new book, Beyond O.

Although sexual abuse has become a hot-button topic in recent months, culminating most recently in Oprah Winfrey’s powerful 2018 Golden Globes speech, Blankenbaker’s message takes a different tone. Rather than the outward solidarity of Facebook’s #MeToo, she focuses on the inner journey of healing, leading not just to a renaissance of her long-dormant sexuality, but also a profound spiritual awakening toward life itself.

“One in five women in the United States could clinically be diagnosed with Female Sexual Dysfunction simply because they don’t feel safe in their bodies. In so many cases, they have been abused, stigmatized, and left with emotional, spiritual, mental, and physical damage that makes it challenging to feel their orgasm,” says Blankenbaker.

“Their voice shuts down and so does their body. I was one of these women. My books deal with the intimate pilgrimage to reclaim my sensuality and my voice. I turned to doctors, therapists, courses, and books to heal myself. In the end, listening to my body and writing the story was the medicine I needed.”

In her new book, Beyond O, Blankenbaker turns away from blaming the men who harassed and assaulted her, and focuses on how she could heal and enjoy her body again. She writes in Beyond O: “Early damage had changed the physiology of my body, and then I changed it back.”

Much like Ensler, Blankenbaker’s own writing and thoughts on the subject expand how we think about the female body, the role of orgasm, and the importance of using your voice. Her books are a celebration of female sensuality that seek to show women around the world they can heal from the trauma of abuse and recover what was once compromised by those who never had any right to it.

Blankenbaker’s work is fast receiving attention from other leaders in the area: “Betsy’s honest, funny, sexy, unapologetic, eccentric journey making friends with her pussy (in Autobiography of an Orgasm) had me laughing, crying, and filled with delight. I was inspired to reclaim every bit of my female potential – and you will too,” commented Laura Davis, author of 1988’s keystone work, The Courage to Heal.

Beyond O is now available on Amazon. The O Diary is scheduled to begin in Spring 2018 with a work-in-progess show on March 31st in Venice, CA.
