Leonard M. Wasserman, Special Real Estate Transactional Counsel at New York City Economic Development Corporation, has been named "Top Male Attorney of the Year" for 2016-2017 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. All honorees will be invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.
With over 40 years of professional experience in the field, Mr. Wasserman has certainly proved himself an accomplished professional and expert in the industry. As a consultant for the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and also as an adjunct professor for Brooklyn Law School, his daily responsibilities are different day to day. For the city he has to have an expert grasp on land use practices, real estate transactions and complex financial instruments. He also must harmonize relationships between the competing interests of the City and private parties. His expertise includes but is not limited to: Public/private Partnerships, Nonprofits, Economic Development, Policy Analysis, Legal Research, Public Policy, Real Estate, Land Use, Real Estate Development, Community Development, Zoning, Contract Negotiation, Legal Writing, Strategic Planning, Real Estate Transactions & Real Estate Economics. As an adjunct professor, he is dedicated to sharing his knowledge and skills as a public/private (‘3P”) transactional lawyer, as well as mentoring his students.
At an early age Mr. Wasserman became interested in urban planning. After graduating from college, he spent a little over a year at the NYC Housing and Development Administration under the administration of Mayor John V. Lindsay. He then decided to take a leave from the ranks of the employed in order to attend Brooklyn Law School to focus on the legal aspects of urban planning and development as a means of establishing credentials in the world of urban planning and development. He graduated Brooklyn Law with his JD in 1972 and served for a year following graduation as a law clerk in the Southern District of New York to a federal district court judge—Judge Murray I. Gurfein. After his clerkship, he spent a few years in private practice where he trained as a real estate attorney. After his private practice experience, he moved into the world of public service, spending several years in public sector legal positions where he applied his skills as a real estate transactional attorney. In 1985 he was appointed as Chief of the Economic Development Division of the NYC Law Department. He served in that position for almost 27 years and became a specialist in the field of public-private real estate partnerships (3P Practice.) Although he retired from full-time municipal employment in 2011, he still continues to support City Hall in its pursuit of its economic development goals utilizing his expertise in real estate and land use law.
Mr. Wasserman has been recognized worldwide for his achievements and has received numerous awards. He has an AV Preeminent Rating with Martindale -Hubbell. He has appeared in numerous publications such as Top Attorneys, American Registry, Worldwide Branding, Pro-Files Magazine, and in 2014 he was selected to have a chapter in the Top 101 Industry Experts publication. He has served as a member of the Academic Studies Advisory Board of the Jewish Theological Seminary in Manhattan for over 20 years, and he currently serves as the chair of the Academic Committee of said Advisory Board.
Looking back Mr. Wasserman attributes his success to his experience and longevity in the field and his passion for what he did every day. When not working he enjoys spending time with his family, sharing his accumulated knowledge of Talmud and other Jewish texts and liturgy by leading small study groups of his peers at his synagogue and remaining active in the community. For the future, Mr. Wasserman aspires to continue growing as a professional and to continue to share his knowledge in order to give back to one of the fine institutions that have helped him successfully navigate his path through life.
