OMAHA, NEBRASKA - 05/18/2018 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

The Indian Institute of Technology-Kharagpur has broken into the Top 50 Times Higher Education (THE) Emerging Economies University Rankings 2018. “THE is the data provider underpinning university excellence in every continent across the world.” (Times Higher Education) Over 350 institutions are ranked based upon THE’s defined core missions: teaching, research knowledge transfer, and international outlook. These core mission items lead to a set of performance indicators that make up the final ranking of the institutes. These indicators are teaching (the learning environment), research (volume, income, and reputation), citations (research influence), international outlook (staff, students, and research), and industry income (knowledge transfer).

IIT-Kgp made a jump from last year’s rank of 71 to this year’s rank of 45 within the Emerging Economies category. India has the second highest number of institutes on the list, behind China. “India has reached a pivotal juncture. It is ambitious and has undoubtedly the potential to emerge as a key player in global higher education in the coming years,” said Phil Baty, editorial director of THE Global Rankings in a statement. “The government’s Institutions of Eminence initiative could certainly elevate selected universities on the global stage and may begin to narrow down the gulf with China in this ranking. But sustained investment, a relentless drive to attract leading global talent, and a reinforced emphasis on international benchmarking will be crucial to realizing its global ambitions,” he said.

IIT Kharagpur continues to find itself near or at the top of many higher education rankings and there are no signs that this outstanding progress will be slowing down anytime soon. Congratulations to IIT Kharagpur for your continued growth and success!
