OKLAHOMA, USA - 09/06/2017 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

ICON Artworks, an art studio located in Kansas City featuring the works of acclaimed sculptor Robin Richerson, has paid tribute to the iconic mascot of Oklahoma State University with the sculptural depiction of Pistol Pete.

“Our mission at ICON Artworks is to immortalize treasured icons in cast bronze and pewter and we’re honored to introduce our Pistol Pete Desktop Sculpture,” said ICON Artworks founder Matt Palmer.  “It’s the perfect gift for Oklahoma State fans, alumni, faculty, and students…particularly for graduation.”

ICON Artworks is offering the Pistol Pete Desktop Sculptures in two sizes: a 5-inch edition and an 8-inch edition (including a museum quality Black Belgian marble base).  The First Edition is limited to 1000 and offered in traditional Cast Pewter with an antique finish and Bronze Plated Cast Pewter with an antique finish. Prices start at $169.95 for the Cast Pewter and $229.00 for the Bronze Plated Cast Pewter.

Each marble base can be customized or personalized with laser engraving to commemorate any event or achievement (e.g., graduation). Each sculpture is officially licensed by Oklahoma State University and IMG College Licensing and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.  They are available through ICON Artwork’s online gallery at www.iconartworks.com.

Each Pistol Pete Desktop Sculpture is handcrafted exclusively in America by ICON Artworks team of skilled artisans and cast in the highest quality, lead-free Fine Pewter alloy used for sculpture.  After platinum, gold, and silver, pewter is the fourth most precious metal in the world. Pewter does not rust or deteriorate and has been used since the Bronze Age because of its lustrous silver finish, its durability and its ability to capture incredibly fine detail.

ICON Artworks will also offer a large-scale, limited edition reproduction of the original clay maquette that will be made-to-order in cast bronze.  “Cast Bronze is our signature line of sculpture at ICON Artworks,” said Palmer. “Cast bronze and pewter are both timeless, classic mediums and our sculptures can be cherished for generations.”

ICON Artworks Signature Cast Bronze employs the ancient “lost-wax” casting method that has been used for more than three thousand years.  Cast Bronze is the ultimate realization for fine art sculpted of clay because of its flawless rendering of detail, its permanence and the richness of textures and patinas that can be achieved.  Our pieces are cast in silicon bronze, the highest quality bronze alloy used for sculpture, then hand-finished with the desired patina.

In addition to the Pistol Pete Desktop Sculptures, ICON Artworks also produced the sculptural depiction of the Evolution of the Jayhawk for the University of Kansas, Herbie Husker for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln…and they have several other “icons” in development.

“Colleges and universities have some of the most passionate and loyal fans in the world and ICON Artworks are tapping into that tremendous spirit with our new series of Collegiate Sports Icons,” said Palmer.  “My uncle Robin has been an active artist for more than two decades and has a remarkable ability to breathe life into clay.” Robin Richerson was mentored for four years by Kwan Wu, a Chinese-American sculptor widely considered to be one of the best figurative sculptors in the world today.

HISTORY OF OSU’s PISTOL PETE MASCOT

Cowboy,  US Marshal, gun-slinger, and blacksmith, Frank “Pistol Pete” Eaton served as the inspiration for Oklahoma State’s mascot.  Approached in 1923 by a group of Oklahoma A&M students after leading Stillwater’s Armistice Day Parade, Eaton, a rugged cowboy serving at the time as the sheriff in the nearby town of Perkins, Oklahoma, agreed to be represented as the mascot.  It was not until 1958, however, that the mascot was made official and not until 1984 that the Pistol Pete caricature became a licensed symbol of OSU.   (Source notesAbout Pistol Pete, Oklahoma State University Library)
