Girl Dreams of Being a Dragon In New Picture Book

Katie Newell, author and illustrator of a new picture book, I’d Rather Be A Dragon, is encouraging kids to be themselves in a vibrant story of a girl who wants to be dragon instead of a princess. The main character is inspired in part by Katie’s own children, who supply an endless stream of creativity and imagination (and also spend a fair amount of time pretending to be dragons).

Before beginning to pen the story, Newell initially had two images that kept coming to mind. One was a girl gazing out a castle window, and the other was a dragon soaring above the clouds. From there things blossomed and grew into a book that celebrates quirks, encourages imagination, and most of all - reminds kids that they are awesome exactly as they are.

“We live at a time where it’s extra confusing to be a kid, there’s so much information available 24/7, and a lot of different voices telling you who you should and shouldn’t be. I wanted to write a story where the character was perceptive enough to recognize her flaws but also confident in her talents and ideas. At the end of the day, she is happy being uniquely herself.” says Newell.

Katie Newell has loved to draw and write ever since she could hold a pencil. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Illustration emphasis from Grand Valley State University in 2002. After spending fifteen years in a variety of graphic, web, and multimedia design roles, she returned to the idea of authoring and illustrating stories for children.
