Dr. Takashi Inoguchi selected as Top Professor of the Year in Political Science by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Dr. Takashi Inoguchi, An Eminent Scholar-Professor of J.F. Oberlin University, Tokyo, former President of the University of Niigata Prefecture, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, and former Assistant Secretary of the United Nations at the United Nations University, Tokyo, was just recently selected as Top Professor of the Year in Political Science for 2019 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.  

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With having over 4 decades of professional experience in Political Science and as a Professor, Dr. Inoguchi has certainly proven himself as an extraordinary professional, and expert in the field.  Dr. Inoguchi is a dynamic, results-driven leader who has demonstrated success not only as President of the University of Niigata Prefecture, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo, Senior Vice Rector of the United Nations University and currently Eminent Scholar-Professor of J.F. Oberlin, Tokyo, but in every position he has ever held.  Dr. Inoguchi’s impressive repertoire of prior roles have included; Associate professor of Sophia University, Professor of Chuo University, Visiting Professor at the Universities of Singapore, Delhi, Gadjah Mada, Seoul National, Australian National, Aarhus, SciencesPo and a visiting fellow at Harvard, Johns Hopkins, California (Berkeley). He has also been Director of the AsiaBarometer Survey since 2002 making him the only scholar, worldwide, who has carried out in all 32 Asian countries west of the Middle East. He has also been the founding editor of three journals: Japanese Journal of Political Science (Cambridge University Press), International Relations of the Asia-Pacific (Oxford University Press), and Asian Journal of Comparative Politics (SAGE Publications). 

Dr. Inoguchi is widely known for his prolific work on Japan, international affairs, comparative politics, and quality of life in Asia west of the Middle East. 

Dr. Inoguchi received his Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts and his Master’s Degree in International Relations from the University of Tokyo.  He earned his Ph.D.  from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.   Stephanie Cirami, President of IAOTP stated, “Choosing Dr. Inoguchi for this honor was an easy decision for our panel to make.  Dr. Inoguchi’s awards, accolades and accomplishments are extremely impressive.  He has tremendous foresight, extensive knowledge, is brilliant at what he does and was exactly what we were looking for.  We are truly honored to have him as our Top Professor of the Year in Political Science and we are looking forward to meeting him at the gala.” 

Throughout his illustrious career, Dr. Inoguchi has received many awards, accolades and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. For 2019, he is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals Magazine), and is also being considered for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He will be honored at IAOTP’s 2019 Annual awards Gala, being held at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas for his selection as Top Professor of the Year in Political Science.   Also for 2019 he is the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Inoguchi was recognized by the United Nations and was the recipient of the International Society for Quality of Life Studies’ Distinguished Research Fellow Award for his QOL focused Asia-wide survey called the AsiaBarometer.  For his wide-ranging contributions to academic work and infrastructure building, he has been awarded the Suntory best book award, the International Communication Fund excellent research award, the International Society for Quality of Life Studies distinguished research fellow award, and the Association of American Publishers' Prize award (for his contribution to The International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences, second edition), edited by James Wright. He has been published in numerous editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Asia and Who’s Who in the World. 

Aside from his successful career, Dr. Inoguchi is also a sought after lecturer, speaker and published author.  He has published more than 100 books in Japanese and 40 books in English in addition to numerous journal articles both in Japanese and English. His total Google citation count registers 4940 with Hirsh index of 35 (as of April 12, 2019). He is a member of the Japan Association of International Relations, the Japan Association of Political Science, the Japan Association of Behaviormetrics, The Japan Foundation of International Economic Exchange, The Yomiuri International Economic Society, The Association of Japanese-Language Teaching, The Business-University Forum Japan, the Suntory Cultural Foundation as well as the American Political Science Association and the Asia Society. 

Looking back, Dr. Inoguchi attributes his success to his education, mentors he had along the way and his passion for research. He says his work is very gratifying and hopes that others will consider a career in Political Science.  When not working, he enjoys traveling and spending time with his family.  For the future, he hopes to continue making a difference in people’s lives any way that he can.
