Dr. Lawrence Jones, Professor Emeritus for the University of Michigan was recently selected as Top Lifetime Physicist of the Year for 2018 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the field.

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities.  All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements. www.iaotp.com/award-gala.

With over 6 decades of professional experience as a seasoned and trusted Professor Emeritus, past Chairman of the Physics Department and acclaimed Scientist, Dr. Jones has certainly proven himself as an accomplished professional and expert in Physics who also served in the United States Army from 1944-1946.He has demonstrated success not only as a Professor Emeritus for the University of Michigan, but in all of his prior positions. His impressive repertoire of prior roles and accomplishments have included NASA Consultant, Trustee for the Universities Research Association, Scientist for the United States Naval Ordnance Laboratory, Teaching Fellow for Northwestern University, Research Assistant for the University of California’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, he was involved with an accelerator technology research group known as the Midwestern Universities Research Association (MURA), which invented the Fixed-Field Alternating Gradient (FFAG) accelerator concept.Jones and other members of the FFAG group built and operated the first accelerator based on this concept. In the 1960s, Dr. Jones led a group which built detectors and technology which enabled the study of cosmic rays at mountain elevations in Colorado, and he is best known for his research activities at the high-energy particle accelerators at Fermilab and CERN.Dr. Jones has also held the positions of visiting physicist and visiting scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Visiting Scientist for CERN (the European Laboratory for Elementary Particle Physics Research), Brookhaven National Laboratory, Fermilab (the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory), the University of Auckland, the University of Sydney, the University of Adelaide, Westfield College (London), and the Tata Institute (India).

Dr. Jones’ past research included participating in the L3 Experiment at the LEP(e+e-) collider together with other Michigan faculty colleagues Professors Byron Roe and J. Keith Riles. This experiment was located at the CERN Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland. The L3 collaboration had over 500 physicists from over 30 Universities and research institutions world-wide, who collected data since 1989 on the characteristics of the Z and W Intermediate Vector Bosons; their production and decay, and on related issues such as B-quark physics. The experiment was completed by 1995 and the spokesman for that experiment was Professor Samuel Ting, who was a doctoral student of Dr. Jones and who later earned the Nobel Prize.Dr. Jones was an active communicator between the cosmic ray physicists and high-energy particle physics experimentalists.

Dr. Jones received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics and Zoology, and his Master of Science Degree in Physics from Northwestern University.Dr. Jones then went on to earn his Ph.D in Physics from the University of California Berkeley in 1952. The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami stated that “Choosing Dr. Jones for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.He is brilliant, his list of accomplishments and accolades are beyond impressive, he is active in numerous organizations and affiliations, he was exactly what we were looking for.We know we will be seeing more outstanding things from this man and hope to spend time with him at the gala.”

He has received many awards, accolades and has been featured in numerous publications multiple years in a row such as Marquis Who’s Who, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in the Midwest, and Who’s Who in the World. For 2019, Dr. Jones is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine and for the Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).For 2018 he was selected as Top Lifetime Physicist of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).Dr. Jones served as former President and Secretary for the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor Michigan. He sat as Chair and Co-Chair of the PhD thesis committees of 17 physics students including Samuel Ting, who later received the Nobel Prize. He is a member of Friends of the History of Physics Group, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Fellow of the Science Research Council, Guggenheim Fellow and the Ford Foundation Fellow.

Aside from his successful career as a Professor and Physicist, Dr. Jones is also a sought after lecturer, speaker, and remains professionally active through his involvement with a variety of international meetings.Dr. Jones has been an invited speaker at seminars, colloquia, workshops, conferences and international symposia on 6 continents where he has presented cosmic ray data and interpretations to accelerator physicists and the results of high energy accelerator experiments to cosmic ray physicists..

Looking back, Dr. Jones attributes his success to his experience, education, mentors he has had along the way and staying passionate in all his endeavors.Dr. Jones says he has been blessed, he loves doing what he is doing, and feels this is just the beginning. When he is not working Dr. Jones enjoys spending time with his family and traveling.
