Dr. Jean Shinoda Bolen selected as Top Doctor of the Year in Psychology by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Jean Shinoda Bolen, M.D., Psychiatrist, Jungian Analyst, International Speaker and Author was recently selected as Top Doctor of the Year in Psychology by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.

Inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. With over six decades of professional experience as a Psychiatrist and Jungian Analyst, Dr. Bolen has certainly proven herself as an accomplished professional and expert in the field. As a dynamic, results-driven leader, Dr. Bolen has demonstrated success not only as a distinguished and trusted psychiatrist, but also as a highly regarded Jungian Analyst. She has held a private practice in Psychiatry since 1967. 

Her impressive repertoire of prior roles have included: a number of positions with the University of California San Francisco such as, clinical professor from 1984 to 2010, associate clinical professor from 1976 to 1984, assistant clinical professor from 1969 to 1976 and clinical instructor from 1967 to 1969. Dr. Bolen is also former clinical professor of psychiatry at Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute for the University of California Medical Center, she was a member of faculty at the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and held residency with the UCSF Department of Psychiatry and the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. She also held a rotating internship with the Los Angeles General Hospital.

Throughout her professional career, Dr. Bolen has been affiliated with a number of professional organizations. She is a member of the International Association for Analytical Psychology, she is a fellow of the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry, fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and fellow of the Northern California Psychiatric Society. Dr. Bolen is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. She belongs to the C.G. Jung Institute of San Francisco and the International Transpersonal Association. 

Before Dr. Bolen became an esteemed Psychiatrist and Jungian Analyst, she graduated from the University of California San Francisco Medical School in 1962, completed her residency in Psychiatry in 1966 and earned her faculty position at UCSF from 1967-2010. Prior to attending UCSF, Dr. Bolen went to Pomona College and graduated from UCLA Berkeley in 1958. Her analytical training was finished at the C.G. Jung Institute in San Francisco.

Throughout her illustrious career, Dr. Bolen has received awards, accolades and has been recognized worldwide for her outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession. This year she is being considered for a feature article in TIP (Top Industry Professional) Magazine and was selected as Top Doctor of the Year in Psychology by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).  For 2021, Dr. Bolen will be considered for the esteemed Empowered Woman Award as well as the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by IAOTP. She is the recipient of the “Women of the Decade in Thought Leadership” from the Women Economic Forum and she has received the Cordoba Award in recognition of her contributions to the “Empowerment of Women” by the Secretary of Equity and Employment Promotion, Alejandra Vigo. Additionally, Dr. Bolen has been given the Rai University Demeter Award for Leadership in Women’s Spirituality from the Association for the Study of Women in mythology, the Women’s Human Rights Award from the Friends of the San Francisco Commission on the Status of Women and the Women of Vision and Action Award. She has also appeared in numerous Who’s Who Listings over the course of her professional career.

Aside from her remarkable career, Dr. Bolen is a sought-after International Author and Speaker. Her books are used as college and university text in gender studies, women’s psychology, mythology, spirituality, east-west philosophy and psychology courses. Dr. Bolen has served as an advocate for women, women’s issues and ethics in psychiatry. She co-founded Psychic and New Realities magazines, publications about parapsychological and mind-body-spiritual subjects. She is the author of thirteen books in over one hundred translations.

Dr. Bolen has also been featured in three widely acclaimed documentaries, “Goddess Remembered”, the first of the Canadian Film Board’s trilogy, “Femme: Women Healing the World” and the Academy-Award winning anti-nuclear proliferation film “Women-For America, For the World”. 

As the NGO Permanent Representative to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women from the Women’s World Summit Foundation (Geneva), Dr. Bolen represents Pathways to Peace, The Millionth Circle, Earthcild Institute, Women’s Perspective and the International Public Policy Institute. Dr. Bolen is a past board member of the Ms. Foundation for Women, served on the board of trustees for the Orthopsychiatric Association and the APA Council on Psychiatric Services, former chair of the APA Council on National Affairs.

Looking back, Dr. Bolen attributes her success to her perseverance, mentors she has had the honor of working alongside and her desire to help people. Dr. Bolen’s Mother was a distinguished Doctor and pioneer in her industry, who encouraged her to pursue her career. When not working, Dr. Bolen enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
