Dr. Arthur Leon, Professor of Exercise Physiology for the University of Minnesota, School of Kinesiology, has been named "Top Doctor of the Year in Higher Education" for 2016-2017 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP).
While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, other affiliations and contributions to their communities. All honorees will be invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.
With almost 60 years of experience in the healthcare field, Dr. Leon has certainly proved himself as an accomplished professional and leader not only in medicine but also in higher education. His impressive career began in 1957 after receiving his medical degree for the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He then went on to complete his internship in 1958 at Henry Ford Hospital, and his residency in 1960 at the Lahey Clinic. While finishing school and establishing his career in medicine, Dr. Leon served the country as Medical officer and Cardiologist, US Army Reserve from 1961-1967 in Europe and Walter Reed Army Medical Center; obtaining the highest rank of Colonel MC. Colonel Leon retired from the army reserve after 38 years of service in 1991 following his last tour of the active duty during Desert Shield. From 1973-1991, Dr. Leon has held the position of Chief Cardiologist in the University of Minnesota's Lipid Research and Heart Disease Prevention Clinic. Currently, he remains as an active Professor at the University of Minnesota, teaching graduate students exercise science.
Dr. Leon is internationally recognized for his research on the role of physical activity in the prevention of CVD. The scope of his research has included animal, epidemiologic/observational, and exercise training studies. His research has resulted in over 350 peer-reviewed publications, 200 articles in professional journals, 50 book chapters, 126 published abstracts, and primary co-author or editor on 2 books. His landmark first-authorized paper from the MRFIT Study, published in JAMA in 1987, was instrumental in the development of national physical activity guidelines for Americans, including the 1996 Surgeon General's Report. Further, Dr. Leon was one of the five principal investigators for the HERITAGE Family Study. This study received an International Olympic Committee Award in 2000 for advancing the understanding of the role of genetic and non-genetic factors in the variability of responsiveness to exercise training.
Dr. Leon has received numerous awards for his accomplishments and research. He has been the recipient of the William G. Anderson Award of the AAPERD and the "Order of the Horse Collar Knights" was awarded by the Exercise Medicine Research Institute from the University of East Finland in Kuppio. He was awarded the 2016 Honor Award by The American College of Sports Medicine. He is founding Fellow in AACVPR, ACSM Fellow since 1970 and ACSM certified program director since 1975, recipient of a Citation Award 1995 and two term vice-president. He remains active as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and Fellow of the The American College of Sports Medicine.
Looking back Dr. Leon believes his success has been attributed to his strong work ethic, experiences he has lived, mentors who have inspired him and a true passion for his work and research.
