Commemorating Steptoe and Edwards’ Ground-Breaking Treatment with a Day of Gratitude

  SYRACUSE, NY - 08/20/2017

Tuesday, September 25, 2017 marks the 39th anniversary of the first successful in vitro fertilization (or IVF) by British researchers Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards.  In this technique, a woman’s egg is combined with a man’s sperm outside the body, in vitro (“in glass”), and then transferred to the woman’s uterus after fertilization has occurred.  Steptoe and Edwards’ successful conception resulted in the live birth of Louise Brown on July 25, 1978 in Manchester, England.

To mark the anniversary of what has become the gold standard in fertility treatment, CNY Fertility plans to celebrate “IVF Day” at each of its locations in Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo, New York.  Couples or individuals interested in learning more about IVF, its costs and other fertility treatment options, are encouraged to schedule an office visit and tour.

Although the basic methodology for IVF has remained remarkably unchanged from Steptoe and Edwards’ successful 1977 experiment, the ability to freeze and subsequently thaw and transfer embryos has significantly improved the feasibility of IVF use. Additionally, the development of the intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) of single sperms into an egg is another milestone.  It is estimated that approximately 1.5% of all births in the U.S. are conceived with the assistance of IVF.

“CNY Fertility and many of our patients are forever grateful to Doctors Steptoe and Edwards for their discovery, which changed the face of fertility treatment around the world and gave so many men and women a fighting chance to build the families of their dreams,” said Dr. Robert Kiltz, CNY Fertility’s Founder and Director.  “Along with IVF, we are pleased to be able to provide our patients with the very cutting-edge technologies of PGD and PGS, along with some more natural and less expensive alternatives to traditional IVF such as INVOcell™.”

Although IVF has the reputation of being a high cost fertility procedure, Dr. Kiltz and CNY Fertility have been committed to provided affordable, high quality fertility treatment for everyone, and making it accessible to all.  Currently ranked as one of the top ten fertility clinics in America (based on Centers for Disease Control/Society for Assisted Reproductive Technologiy data), CNY Fertility’s services include egg and sperm freezing for future family planning, donor eggs, IUI, PGS, and IVF cycles for as low as $3,900 per cycle--among the most affordable pricing in the nation.
