Business Council Of Westchester Joins With Astorino To Announce 2017 Westchester Green Business Honorees

Westchester Green Business recognized six exemplary businesses for their achievements in sustainability at the 7th Annual WGB Awards Ceremony that was recently held at The Briarcliff Manor. Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino and Dr. Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of The Business Council of Westchester joined WGB Program Directors Dani Glaser and Scott Fernqvist to recognize a prestigious group of Westchester organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and outstanding achievements in the following categories:

Over 120 attendees celebrated the commitment that members of Westchester Green Business have shown as they champion efforts towards a renewable future, while staying competitive and reducing operating costs. 

“Over the past seven years Westchester Green Business has grown into a national model for how to effectively engage the business community around sustainability issues,” Astorino said. “The program has attracted companies as diverse as the county itself, ranging from small retail shops to large hospitals, universities and multinational corporations. I congratulate all the honorees and applaud their efforts to make a positive impact on the environment and the economy.”

The highly prestigious Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award was presented this year to the Hendrick Hudson Free Library (HHFL). The library was awarded the 2016 Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award by The New York State Regents Advisory Council on Libraries for being the first library in Westchester County to achieve green business certification. Library Director Jill Davis explained how their two-year process toward certification led not only to a greener library, but new opportunities to leverage other funding sources, increase staff and community engagement, and position the library as an industry leader. HHFL embodies the spirit of the Charles W. Brown, Jr. Sustainability Award by being a tireless proponent of environmental sustainability within their own facility and the community at large.

“This is the eighth year we are recognizing Westchester Businesses for their commitment to sustainability,’’ said Marsha Gordon, President and CEO of the Business Council of Westchester. “We are so pleased that this initiative continues to grow and that we now have 83 members and more than 20 businesses who are certified. Congratulations to this year’s honorees for setting a great example.’’
