INDEPENDENCE, OHIO - 10/26/2017 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

Koinonia Homes, a leading provider of day programs, residential and employment services for people with developmental disabilities, has launched a campaign to purchase a $65,000 18-passenger bus with an electric wheelchair lift that will improve health care, employment and community access for hundreds of people.

“Many of us take basic transportation for granted,” said Diane Beastrom, president and CEO of Koinonia Homes. “But for people with developmental disabilities, transportation is a lifeline to the outside world, doctor’s appointments, work and everyday activities. For many of our clients, reliable transportation represents freedom and personal independence.”

Supporters can text “BUCKS” to 56512 to donate, or visit https://koinoniahomes.org/bucks-for-a-bus/ to donate securely online.

Koinonia serves more than 500 clients throughout northeast Ohio. The organization maintains and operates 55 vehicles, which provide 36,000 trips per year. But the demand continues to grow. The new bus will enable 400 additional rides per year.

Despite specific provisions in the Americans with Disabilities Act, appropriate and affordable transportation services often remain inaccessible to individuals with developmental disabilities. As a private nonprofit organization, Koinonia helps close many of the gaps between need and available resources.

“On the surface, buying a new bus might seem simple,” Beastrom said. “But when wheelchair accessibility and other special accommodations are required, this basic step remains underfunded.”
