Birth Control App Launches in Indiana

Nurx is a telemedicine startup, based in San Francisco, focused on making birth control, as well as Truvada for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) more accessible to everyone through an app. With the app, users can get a prescription from a doctor and have their medication delivered right to their door. Nurx will launch the birth control app and service in Indiana on Tuesday, August 29, 2017.

A 2015 Guttmacher Institute report showed that 49% of all pregnancies in Indiana were unplanned in 2010, costing taxpayers $376 million that year. However, according to a separate Guttmacher Institute report, the total gross public savings from preventing unintended pregnancies would have been over $277 million if women and couples could be empowered to prevent them.

Making contraception more accessible is one major way to reduce unintended pregnancies. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), "The most effective way to reduce abortion rates is to prevent unintended pregnancy by improving access to consistent, effective, and affordable contraception."

“Research shows that the easier and more affordable birth control is, the more women will use it,” said Hans Gangeskar, cofounder and CEO of Nurx. Nurx’s birth control app makes this a reality, by reducing the barriers to access often times at little or no cost to the patient.

How the App Works:
The app works for both new and existing birth control users and the service and shipping are often free to anyone with health care coverage. For uninsured patients, Nurx can connect the user with some brands for as low as $15, and delivery is still free.

After choosing their birth control type and brand, users answer a medical questions online, and then enter their shipping and insurance information for a licensed physician to review. Once the review is complete, the doctor will issue and fill the prescription, which will be delivered to their home at no additional cost.

For North Carolina residents who do not have health insurance, the company is also giving away a $30 credit for free birth control through the app. This equates to up to two months of birth control for free, depending on the brand selected. Users will simply enter the promo code ‘INDIANA’ at checkout to get this deal.

The pill remains available by prescription only throughout the United States today, but with our app, we’re making birth control more accessible than ever."
