AMARILLO, TEXAS - 01/15/2018 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

We entrust our children to schools to provide them a better education than we can provide our children ourselves.  We trust that our schools are operating to the highest standards based on up-to-date research, and we are extremely saddened when we find districts ignoring 50 years of settled knowledge.

We know that the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the National Association of School Psychologists have taken a public stand against in-school corporal punishment.  We know that the nation of Israel outlawed corporal punishment in 2000, along with 52 other countries which have outlawed corporal punishment as of 2018.

We know that corporal punishment has been linked with: Depression, Drug Use Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Suicide, Lower Wages, Less Education, Increased Student Aggression, Wife Beating and Child Abuse. A small sampling of the available research can be found at www.BeatYourChildren.Com.

River Road ISD and other Texas ISDs claim they are only hitting children with parental permission.  They fail to address the fact that they have access to pertinent research showing the dangers of such actions. Instead of spreading awareness about the dangers of corporal punishment, they have become active participants in reducing the well-being of their own communities.

I do not expect the BeatYourChildren.Com campaign to change River Road ISD’s position on actively hitting children. I do not expect that Texas will follow in Israel’s example and outlaw corporal punishment in schools.  I do not expect any change in parental behavior. But I do expect that every child in America will now know that adults, who can read, are neglecting all available research and subjecting them to highly damaging and unjustifiable punishment techniques.

There is now no way to ignore the research, because every child with internet access can download it and take it to school to share.  Now, every student capable of reading knows better than to use corporal punishment on students.  Now beating children will end, because students will grow into informed and educated adults who will join the world in ending corporal punishment in schools.
