Atlanta Gathering of Angels Celebrates 20 Years Matching Entrepreneurs with Angel Investors

For 20 years, making dreams come true has been only part of what Tarby Bryant is doing with The Gathering of Angels.

The Gathering is a monthly meeting of 25-35 accredited angel investors, venture capitalists and investment bankers who hear presentations from and meet with up to four young, entrepreneurial companies in need of seed and early stage capital investment. 

Celebrating its 20^th anniversary when it meets Tuesday, October 11 from 4:30pm-7:00pm at The City Club of Buckhead, the Gathering of Angels has facilitated an estimated $75 million through some 400 capital fundings of new, start-up businesses.

Bryant and his GOA team coach the presenting companies in mandatory practice sessions to maximize their 20-minute presentations and question-and-answer periods within parameters established by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In return, the presenting companies pay GOA a flat presentation fee with no percentage of capital raised from their presentations at the monthly meetings.

“Some folks liken us to the television show, Shark Tank, but I believe our platform is much friendlier and more civil while being potentially beneficial to investors and presenters alike,” Bryant says. “Maybe it’s because we serve our investors complimentary wine and a light supper before the presentations,” he explained.

 “We’ve had companies present and get funding from all over the United States and other countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico and even Japan,” said Bryant.  “Although we earlier had our GOA forums in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, we have found Atlanta to be such a fertile ground for both presenters and angel investors that we have been focusing on Atlanta for the past four years.”

Industry sectors helped over the years by The Gathering of Angels range from software, hardware, medical devices, restaurants, hotels and bed and breakfasts to soft drink, wine and spirits companies, clothing, fashion accessories, senior living facilities and more.

Author of "The Entrepreneur's Guide to Raising Capital from Angel Investors," Bryant explained that The Gathering of Angels, founded in 1996, is not a club.

”It is a forum for angel investors to hear the hottest investment opportunities in young entrepreneurial start-up companies. Most of the fundings secured by presenters are in the $100k-$500k range.”

Bryant currently lives in Jasper, GA’s Big Canoe community, just north of Atlanta where his Sweetwater Capital Corporation and Gathering of Angels are headquartered. In the past he was CEO of the family business – the National Automobile Association - and worked in real estate finance and hotel development. In the mid 80’s he was CEO of The Atlanta Economic Development Corporation (AEDC), now called Invest Atlanta.
