Alan McGowan selected as Top Science and Technology Expert of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)

Alan H. McGowan, Educator of The New School, has just recently been selected as Top Science and Technology Expert of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) for his outstanding leadership and commitment to Environmental Studies.  

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field and other affiliations and contributions to their communities.  All honorees are invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements. www.iaotp.com/award-gala 

With over 5 decades of professional experience as a noted Educator and Scientist, Mr. McGowan has certainly proven himself as an expert in the field.As a dynamic, results-driven leader, Mr. McGowan has demonstrated success not only as Chair of The New School’s Environmental Studies undergraduate program, but has demonstrated success in all his past positions.His impressive repertoire of prior roles and accomplishments include, Educator at Eugene Lang College, Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Science, he ran two nonprofits: The Scientists’ Institute for Public Information and The Gene Media Forum, which were created in order to try to improve public understanding of science by writing science stories in the mass media.Mr. McGowan also ran an environment education program for high school students and was involved in the National Earth Day Celebration every year since its inception. His areas of expertise are in social impact of science and technology, environmental justice, racial issues, impact of race on health, biological conception of race, and science and the environment.

Throughout his career, Mr. McGowan has received many awards and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the profession.For 2019, he is being considered to be featured in TIP (Top Industry Professional Magazine), and is also being considered for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award. For 2018 he was selected as Top Science and Technology Expert of the Year by the International Association of Top Professionals.For 2017 he was recognized by Marquis Who’s Who with the Lifetime Achievement Award. He received the Teacher Recognition Award by the American Association of Physics Teachers and Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Aside from his successful career, Mr. McGowan is a sought after lecturer, author of hundreds of articles and journals, and member of professional organizations.Some publications include “Genes and Race in the Classroom,” Journal of College Science Teaching; “Challenges for Environmental Studies”, Environment, “Genomics:Perceptions of the Public and the Press” GeneLetter. He is Board Chair of Student Pugwash USA, Board Member for the Bermuda Biological Station for Research, Executive Editor for Environment Magazine, Board Member for Metcalf Institute for Environmental Journalism, Elected Member for the Council on Foreign Relations, Elected Member for Society of Environmental Journalists, and Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Mr. McGowan earned his Bachelor of Engineering Degree from Yale University in 1957.
