Sinopec Engineering (Group) Co., Ltd. (SEG) and C2XX Corp. (C2XX) have entered into a Cooperative Marketing Agreement (CMA) to accelerate the commercialization of C2XX’s Advanced Direct Microcatalytic Coal Liquefaction technology (Advanced MCL). This couples SEG’s experience in designing the only commercial Direct Coal Liquefaction (DCL) plant in the world with SEG’s worldwide marketing reach and with C2XX’s access to over $1 billion (US) of R&D in Advanced MCL technology.
For China, Advanced MCL offers a high thermal efficiency option that consumes as little as only one third of the water currently used by coal-to-liquids technologies and provides an ideal fit with existing Fisher Tropsch plants to produce premium diesel, gasoline, and aromatics for chemicals use. The resulting fuels have high volumetric energy content, excellent cold flow properties, and contain no sulfur, nitrogen, or oxygen.
In the US, studies indicate that combination of abundant/low cost coal with natural gas results in a break-even cost of under 30 $/B at a thermal efficiency greater than 70%. Process flexibility exists to selectively shift up to 70% of the product to diesel which will become desirable should the penetration of electric cars reduce the gasoline demand for motor vehicles. “This approach would allow an order of magnitude increase in US fuels reserves” said C2XX’s CEO Sam Zaczepinski.
Low oil prices, high investments, and low service factor are often cited as hurdles for DCL technology. “These are concerns of the past” says C2XX’s CTO Richard Bauman. High service factor was demonstrated commercially, the investment is reduced through application of new, high activity Microcatalyst, and other technology advances. Finally, the much lower break-even cost of the Advanced MCL technology validates the economic viability.
C2XX also offers algae based bio-fertilizer technology that offsets the CO2 produced in the process. In addition, the Advanced MCL technology eliminates waste water discharge and captures nearly all sulfur produced during coal liquefaction. Further, a novel option is under development to eliminate ash disposal from the plant. Hence, the C2XX technology becomes economically and environmentally attractive for countries with large coal reserves.
