DALLAS, TEXAS - 10/19/2017 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

New UI for LXD advances the adoption of container technology on Linux.

As part of AdaptiveScale's newly released Custer Manager 1.3 software, we are proud to announce that we have released LXDUI as an open source project under the Apache 2.0 license.

Aptly named, LXDUI is a web based user interface for the LXD/LXC tool set.  The open source project is available on GitHub at: http://github.com/adaptivescale/lxdui.

“AdaptiveScale makes extensive use of LXD/LXC to virtualize workloads and we are hopeful that contributing our web based user interface for container management with LXD will further drive adoption of Linux containers as a super-fast alternative for virtualization on Linux,” said Ajdin Idrizi, co-founder and CTO.

Linux containers provide a lightweight alternative to traditional hypervisors. They are like virtual machines, only much smaller and faster.  Docker helped popularize the container concept and the ecosystem of tools surrounding it. Its popularity has ushered in a new wave of adoption that allows users to deliver applications encapsulated with the infrastructure elements apps depend on.

Although Linux containers are nothing new, the availability of modern graphical user interfaces was lacking for LXD. At AdaptiveScale we sought to close this gap by creating a simple and easy to use web based application that will help drive adoption of LXD, and help users quickly bootstrap projects that can benefit from container based virtualization.  As we brought AdaptiveScale Cluster Manager 1.3 to market the ability to create Hybrid Cloud infrastructure, where resources can reside either on public clouds or in the data center, required that we leverage virtualization technology that not only behaves like a traditional hypervisor, but also provides far more density and has bare-metal performance characteristics.  Containers provide the flexibility to encapsulate the infrastructure in a light-weight machine instance and deploy it anywhere.

As a next?generation hypervisor for Linux at scale, LXD takes virtualization to the next level with its unparalleled density and bare-metal performance. LXD machine containers behave like traditional physical or virtual machines so applications can be installed and run unmodified.  Linux administrators should feel right at home with LXD as it behaves very much like an ordinary Linux machine.  Just like you would with a traditional Linux system, you can log in remotely via SSH, perform distribution native package management functions, install applications, run programs, use the standard distro tool, and manage the guest OS as usual.  Nearly all applications can be installed in LXD containers without having to touch the applications to make them run.  LXD guests launch in seconds and a single server can support hundreds of containers.
