A great result for Share Lawyers vision impaired Client

Ontario’s leading disability law firm, Share Lawyers, recently won a case for their client Chloe B., who was denied her benefits by her insurance company.

Ms. B., is a sign language interpreter for a school board in the Greater Toronto Area. After a diagnosis of early onset macular degeneration, she lost her central vision and was unable to work.

“I had two insurance policies: long-term disability through my work’s group benefits and a critical illness policy I’d purchased 10 years earlier,” said Ms. B.

“Honestly, I never thought I’d have to use either of them.”

Although her long-term disability benefits were approved, the insurance company denied her critical illness benefits claiming the illness didn’t meet the specific criteria outlined in the policy.

Frustrated, Ms. B. appealed the claim and was denied a second time. She met with  Janice Grevler at Share Lawyers for legal counsel and decided to challenge her insurance company.

“The insurance company incorrectly believed that Ms. B’s condition didn’t constitute blindness,” said Ms. Grevier.

After winning her case, Chloe was eager to get back to adjusting to her new life with this condition. However, without the financial stress from her insurance company, this transition has become easier.
