Roundup Weed Killer Lawsuit

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The popular herbicide Roundup, manufactured by chemical company behemoth Monsanto, has been linked to non-Hodgkins lymphoma, but an EcoWatch story from early 2015 contends that the product may be responsible for many more health issues.

Roundup’s active ingredient, glyphosate, has been at the heart of cancer risks – mainly non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma -- associated with exposure. However, studies have shown that a so-called “inert” ingredient in the herbicide, polyoxyethylemeamine (POEA), can be more dangerous to those exposed to it. POEA is a “surfactant,” a detergent added to the herbicide, to help it adhere to the leaves and stalks of weeds, enhancing the herbicide’s killing power.

Roundup is the most popular herbicide in the world, used by both consumers and commercial/agricultural interests. In recent years, its use has grown exponentially because of the rise of genetically modified crops. These varieties of corn, soybeans, cotton and other crops have been changed at the molecular level to withstand use of the herbicide.

According to EcoWatch, these health issues have been attributed to exposure to Roundup:

• Attention deficit disorder (ADHD). Glyphosate can affect thyroid function, which could lead to ADHD.
• Alzheimer’s Disease. Roundup has been shown to affect cells in the same way Alzheimer’s does. It also can affect a particular enzyme linked to Alzheimer’s.
• Anencephaly, a birth defect. Research has shown a correlation between women who lived within 1,000 meters of where Roundup had been used and anencephaly, which is a defect that prevents correct head formation in an embryo.
• Autism. Studies have indicated that glyphosate affects bacteria in similar ways to autism. Also, glyphosate can lead to deposits of aluminum in the brain, which leads to autism.
• Birth defects. Case studies from throughout South America showed increased birth defects of various types when the mothers lived close to areas sprayed with Roundup. The defects included urinary tract deformations, improperly grown anus, heart defects and problems with sex organs.
• Cancers. Types of cancer associated with exposure to Roundup include brain, breast, lung and prostate cancers. Rates were up to four times higher than normal.
• Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS). A deficiency of sulfate in the brain causes ALS. Glyphosate has been shown to inhibit the transport of sulfate from the digestive system to the brain.
• Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Medical theory indicates that glyphosate allows bacteria from the digestive system to leak, which in turn leads to immune system malfunction, eventually leading to MS.
• Parkinson’s Disease. Many studies have shown a causal relationship between exposure to herbicides, including those including glyphosate, and the onset of Parkinson’s.
• Pregnancy issues. Medical research has shown that glyphosate is toxic to human placental cells, and exposure can lead to infertility, miscarriages and stillbirths.

Attorney Lisa G. Douglas of North Little Rock said the evidence is overwhelming that exposure to Roundup affects men, women and children.

“This herbicide has been linked to  deaths and terrible diseases in the elderly, adults, children and even embryos. It is obviously a compound that should not be used anywhere near people,” she contended.

Other concerns linked to glyphosate include reproductive complications, respiratory illnesses, inflamed bowel conditions, obesity, liver disease, heart disease and diabetes.
