PUYALLUP, WA - 06/03/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

Puyallup resident Derek Maynes is launching his campaign for state representative of the 2nd Legislative District in hopes of serving the public again. The Democrat, 39, is a former airman and disabled veteran from the South Hill area.

“I grew up in a working class family and left home at age 18 for the Air Force. I served my country for 12 years and fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom,” the candidate said. “It would be an honor to use the strong core values the military instilled in me for the betterment of Thurston and Pierce County and our great state of Washington as a whole.”

The Air Force brought Maynes to Puyallup in 2005, but his military career was cut short when he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at the age of 28. After a life-saving surgery, he was medically retired. As a disabled veteran, Maynes went back to school and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in aviation maintenance technology from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, graduating cum laude. Now, the husband and father of two runs a successful small business.

“It is in my nature to be a fighter. Nothing was given to me in life -- I earned it. I’m hoping for the opportunity to advocate for this district and make it as great as the residents it represents,” Maynes said.

The primary election will be held on August 2, 2016 and the general election will follow on November 8, 2016. For more information on Maynes, please visit www.derekmaynes.com.
