ZACHARY, LA - 07/28/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

Margaret Cline Harmon announced the release of her book, Moments In History, in May 2016.  Harmon revised and updated the first brief history of Zachary United Methodist Church, written by Preston Kennedy in 1990.  Additionally, she interviewed nine members who were descendants of founding members who are in the second half of their life, to capture their remembrances of growing up in Zachary Methodist’s second wooden church and on their growing up in the small town of Zachary.  The original Methodist Episcopal Church, South burned to the ground in 1914.  A second wooden church was built on the same footprint of the first church and was used as a sanctuary until 1949.  At that time, members built a third church, which was brick.  Members moved the existing second church to the east of the new sanctuary and continued to use it for Sunday school classes and church parties for eight more years.  The second wooden church was sold in 1957, upon the completion of its new brick Educational Building.

The nine members profiled in Moments In History are:  Minnie Kirkwood Jackson, Felicia Lipscomb Fizgerald, Robin Ford Pope, Eppie Tiner Parker, Henry Bushman Baxter, Jr., Patricia Pope Babin, Charles Devall, Joe W. “Andy” Annison III,  and Jennifer Ayer Bass.  Each provided a first-hand glimpse of what it was like growing up in small town America during the Great Depression.  Readers get a glimpse into everyday living in a by-gone era.  Readers learn actual first-hand historical accounts of what it was like growing up in the early twentieth century.  There is also good advice given by the interviewees that apply to every generation.  The interviews in the book can be enjoyed more than once.

Zachary United Methodist Church Senior Pastor Ricky Willis commented on the book as follows, “Interviews were conducted with some of the descendants of Charter Member of our Church, to commemorate Zachary United Methodist Church’s 125th Anniversary celebrated on October 11, 2015.  Their memories and reflections contained here are priceless historical snapshots of what it was like growing up in the Zachary United Methodist Church and the Zachary area during our formative years. These interviews, along with an updated history of our church written by Church Historian, Margaret Harmon, is a true treasure to cherish for all who have been blessed to be a part of this great church.”

The book is available for purchase, the cost is $7.00 each, at the Zachary United Methodist Church office, 4205 Church Street in Zachary, and is next to Zachary High School.  Church office hours are 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday.  You may also contact Margaret Harmon at 225-788-5999 or email mcharmon1@gmail.com for mail orders.
