SALISBURY, NC - 12/07/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

To accentuate 21st century science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education research conducted at HBCUs, Dr. Lamont A. Flowers, Dr. Lawrence O. Flowers, and Dr. James L. Moore III edited a new book titled, Advancing Educational Outcomes in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. It was published by the University Press of America.

"The edited book highlights the importance of conducting STEM education studies at HBCUs and features innovative research findings, best practices, and emerging trends in STEM education," said Dr. Lamont A. Flowers, the Distinguished Professor of Educational Leadership and the Executive Director of the Charles H. Houston Center for the Study of the Black Experience in Education at Clemson University.

In recent years, the editors have explored a number of issues impacting STEM education at HBCUs. For example, they lead a panel presentation in 2014 at the White House Initiative on HBCUs conference to discuss strategies to increase the representation of African Americans with STEM degrees in the workforce. The editors have also conducted several National Science Foundation (NSF) grant-funded studies that examined the effects of institutional characteristics and psychosocial factors on STEM students' development and success at HBCUs.

In this edited volume, several of the chapters were based also on NSF-funded research projects through the HBCU-UP program. The authors of these chapters, based on their grant findings, offered specific recommendations for STEM education practice for both the PreK-12 and postsecondary levels.

"Drs. Lamont A. Flowers, Lawrence O. Flowers, and I are really excited about convening the work of a cadre of STEM scholars, scientists, and practitioners who have been successful in obtaining federal funding and other funding for their research," said Dr. James L. Moore III, Education and Human Ecology Distinguished Professor of Urban Education and the Executive Director of the Todd Anthony Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male at The Ohio State University. To this end, "Our edited volume is designed to showcase and disseminate important STEM education research that has broader impacts beyond HBCUs," said Dr. Moore.

Contributing authors as well as the individuals who reviewed and endorsed the edited book include esteemed higher education leaders, policymakers, and researchers from HBCUs. "The book also promotes the need for STEM faculty to focus on teaching career-related skills in classroom and research settings to enhance student achievement," said Dr. Lawrence O. Flowers, who is an Associate Professor of Biology and Department Chair of Biology at Livingstone College.
