MOTHER OF WRONGFUL DEATH VICTIM CALLS FOR OFFICER'S FIRING

On Monday, January 30, 2017 Gloria Pinex will hold a press conference to call for the firing of officer Raul Mosqueda, the officer who fatally shot her son, Darius Pinex, during a traffic stop in 2013.

Mosqueda, who was at the center of a multi-million-dollar wrongful death suit in which it was revealed he lied to investigators about the shooting, was recently promoted to field training officer (FTO) by the Chicago Police Department.

Ms. Pinex is outraged that the officer’s proven misconduct is being rewarded instead of sanctioned by his superiors. She will speak to how such actions serve to further fracture the relationship between Chicago police and the communities they are sworn to serve. “Promoting a lying officer and putting him in a position to train other officers in the same dishonest habits sends the wrong message,” she stated.

Recent investigations by the Department of Justice have called for more independent oversight of Chicago police, but Ms. Pinex feels the solution has to start within the department itself. “The problem of violence in the streets can be cured,” she said, “But not by paying a large law firm millions of dollars to investigate, or having the Justice Department tell us what we already know. The police themselves should be looking for ways to work with the community to rebuild trust.” Without that involvement, she believes, any promises of change will be nothing more than lip service.

Ms. Pinex, who has become an outspoken activist for police accountability, will also be speaking out against the militarization of police departments as well as any federal intervention as recently suggested by President Trump.

Last month, the City of Chicago settled the suit brought by the family of the slain 27-year-old father of three after police misconduct and a massive cover-up surrounding the shooting were revealed. Ms. Pinex believes that “any promotion of this officer rewards his dishonesty, his wrongdoing, and is the exact opposite of the message that ought be sent.”

The press conference will be held at 2:00 p.m. in front of the 7^th District police station in Englewood, 1438 W. 63^rd St. in Chicago.
