Matt M. Matsuo, COO and President of r-pac International Group has been named "Top Entrepreneur of the Year in Private Labeling" for 2016-2017 by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP)!

The International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) has named Matt M. Matsuo, COO and President of r-pac International Group, “Top Entrepreneur of the Year in Private Labeling” for 2016-2017!

While inclusion within the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in and of itself, these special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, longevity in the field, as well as other contributions to their communities. Few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction and will be invited to attend the IAOTP’s annual award gala at the end of this year for a night to honor their achievements.

With over 52 years of international business experience, Matt has certainly proved himself in the private labeling and packaging industry. 

During the 60's & 70’s, Matt led the globalization of the YKK Zipper Corporation, expanding their business worldwide and helping them become the number one zipper company in America in less than 10 years.

In the late 70’s, he developed the “private label” concept for the packaging industry and successfully promoted it globally. His model was adapted world wide, creating a multi-billion dollar industry.  Matt is fondly referred to as the "Godfather of Private Labeling and Packaging."  

Moving on from YKK, he eventually started his own company, realizing the lack of competition in the market. Within 10 years, it ranked second in the world.

Today, he oversees all aspects of sourcing, production, distribution and international operations at r-pac International Group. The company has been awarded by major retailers for their consistency in maintaining brand integrity and has become a leader in the private distribution of both an array of softline apparel labels, packaging and tags as well as hardline packaging. Additionally, their involvement in the retail solutions business has helped further shape the private label packaging industry.

With over 30 manufacturing locations worldwide, including 11 US and 7 EU Sales Offices, r-pac International continues to thrive. Matt has created a legacy.

Matt received his Bachelors of Business in Global Marketing and Retailing from Kyoto University of Foreign Studies in 1964.  He remains active with various YKK foundations and American private label industry organizations. Additionally, he is affiliated with charities bringing relief to areas of Japan affected by the 2011 T?hoku Earthquake and Tsunami.

In his free time, which is rare, Matt enjoys Kendo (Japanese fencing), spending time with his family, and gardening.

Looking back, Matt attributes his success to his discipline and determination; skills acquired through his martial arts training. 

He is currently working on his book about the industry, his life, the people he’s met and the experiences he’s had along the way. He hopes to retire in 2 years so he can spend more time with his wife and continue with his Kendo studies.

He wants to be remembered as a man of integrity – kind, with a big heart.
