International Soca Superstar Destra Garcia Soaks Up Charts with Crossover Single

The proclaimed “Queen of Bacchanal”, Destra Garcia is set for world domination as she announces the release of her upcoming single, “Luv With The Riddim”.  Produced by two-time Grammy nominated producer/songwriter Drew “Druski” Scott (Zendaya, Teyana Taylor, Fantasia, Tori Kelly) “Luv With The Riddim” blends elements of Soca, Dancehall and Pop.  The single is the first international release from the Caribbean-Latina born singer-songwriter and will be available on all digital platforms June 8, 2016.

If you ever heard of the word “Carnival” then the name Destra isn’t far behind.  The festive season, that occurs before Lent (typically February or March) is revered throughout the entire Caribbean.   With Trinidad and Tobago being one of the premiere spots for the world during the celebratory season, many “Islanders” and visitors alike find themselves singing, “It’s Carnival” – Destra’s chart topping duet with Soca star Machel Montano.  Released from her first album Red, White, Black (2003), the song has became the virtual anthem of Carnival throughout the Caribbean, Canada and even touching stateside in New York, Miami and Los Angeles.  Since then, she has released several LP’s, won six consecutive COTT (Copyright Organization of Trinidad & Tobago) Female Songwriter of the Year Awards, the Black Canadian Awards Best International Act (Caribbean) in 2014/2015 and the International Soca Award in 2013 for her second Carnival virtual anthem “Lucy”.   Artists such as Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Trinidad James and Drake sing of the Soca queen’s praises.

“I knew that this was my calling once I saw my music reach people in other worlds,” states Destra.  “I’ve been fortunate enough to be in this industry for over fifteen years and perform with International artists.  They are listening.  The people are listening.  Now I want the planet to see me.”

Caribbean Beat Magazine describes Destra’s music as “…the kind of sound that a young person living at the crossroads of cultures and technologies that is Trinidad and Tobago today, is likely to produce.”  Her huge following is mainly attributed to her “light yet aggressive” sound that reflects not only life in Trinidad and Tobago but also many corners of the globe.

“I wanted Destra to stay true to her roots,” says two-time Grammy nominated producer Druski.  “When I visited Trinidad I fell in love with the authenticity in the people and culture.  Trinidad is such a vibe.  I wanted to capture that vibe and give it a little mainstream appeal.  It’s still Destra but Destra evolved.”

As one of the Caribbean’s most coveted live performers, Destra plans on introducing her new sound onstage as well.

“I think my current fans and new fans will appreciate what we are doing with this sound,” exclaims Destra.  “It’s me, just a new and improved me that’s ready to mash up the world one stage at a time.”
