How one man used Oprah to get through pain

New book shares author’s horrific family life, his path to recovery, spiritual awakening

He can be summed up as a Survivor. James W. Mercer, Ph.D. says he grew up thinking he was a 'mistake.' He says his father was an alcoholic and homophobic, and denied him as his son. As a child, James channeled his hurt and anger into letters he wrote to Oprah Winfrey. As an adult, he channeled his experience into a new book called "Secrets & Shame: Dear Oprah Diaries,” (published by Archway Publishing) This book tells the journey of an abused teen, and how strength and determination can win. James started a non-profit in Texas called Lonestar Fostering Connections to help other teens in similar situations. He is currently on a nation-wide book tour, he is a father of three, a child and family advocate, LGBT supporter, and dedicates himself to finding forever homes for foster kids.

“Society places a lot of emphasis on where you come from,” Mercer points out. “This book and my story will help break those notions and shows that anyone can overcome labels. It is an inspirational story that everyone can gleam some usefulness from.”

“Secrets & Shame” hopes to make readers realize that no matter what appearances show, usually, there is more to people than the labels placed on them.

About the Author

James W. Mercer, Ph.D., holds a doctorate in counseling psychology and a degree in funeral service. He owns a foster care and adoption agency focusing on the hundreds of children throughout Texas who have suffered abuse. He lives in Austin with his partner and three daughters and finds joy in his Jewish faith and community.
