LONDON, UK - 02/01/2017 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

Dr. Roger James Morris has been selected by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP), for their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for 2017!

While inclusion with the International Association of Top Professionals is an honor in itself, only a few members are chosen for this distinction based on their years of experience in the field, professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, and contributions to their communities.  These are truly incredibly talented professionals who have dedicated their life to their work and have had a lifetime of achievement and success!

Dr. Roger James Morris was honored at the 2016 IAOTP’s Annual Award Gala, at the luxurious Garden City Hotel for being selected as “Top Professor of the Year in Molecular Neurobiology.” IAOTP will be announcing him for his selection for the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2017 Annual Award Gala being held at the end of this year, and he will be receiving the Sapphire Diamond Crystal piece engraved for his Lifetime of Achievement and Success.

Dr. Morris is being recognized for having over 25 years of professional experience in higher education and in Molecular Neurobiology field, and for his commitment to the industry.  Stephanie Cirami, Vice President of IAOTP stated “Choosing Dr. Morris for this award was an easy decision for our panel to make.  Roger is a talented, dynamic, charismatic, results-driven leader, who has demonstrated success throughout his career and we enjoyed spending time with him at our gala.  He is brilliant at what he does and he is a huge asset to the IAOTP organization.  We will be seeing more great things for this man!”

Dr. Morris first took up a scientific staff position in the Laboratory of Neurobiology at the MRC National Institute for Medical Research in London, after completing his PhD from the University of Oxford in 2005, and a postdoctoral Jane Coffin Childs Fellowship at the University of Connecticut Health Centre.  He moved to Guy’s Hospital Medical School in 1995, which merged with King’s College London in 1998. Within King’s, he climbed the ranks steadily,  first becoming a Professor of Molecular Neurobiology in 2001, to becoming the Head of Department of Biochemistry in 2005.  In 2007 he was promoted to Head of School of Biomedical Sciences or what we call in the US as “Dean of Faculty. “

Roger seized the opportunity to upgrade biomolecular imaging at both fluorescent and electron microscopic levels to make King’s, in partnership with instrument manufacturers JEOL and Nikon. He oversaw a doubling in research income while modernizing and simplifying undergraduate and postgraduate education.  Dr. Morris secured the first UK Research Council (BBSRC) funding for a Doctoral Training Centre at King’s which expanded to include University College of London and other London universities in one of the BBSRC’s major PhD training centers. He also opened up the experimental animal facilities to the press, politicians and public groups (including the redoubtable Women’s Institute) to enable all to see what is actually involved in UK biomedical research.

Roger’s willingness to speak to the press, and allow the press unrestricted access to the experimental animal houses, at a time when others in the UK would not,  set an example and pattern which other universities increasingly started to adopt.  In 2015 King’s was awarded the Prize for Media Engagement in Openness in Animal Research due to Dr. Morris’s outstanding participation.  Another highlight of Roger’s career was when King’s closed its Chemistry Department in 2003 due to the declining student numbers.  The Chemistry Dept which was founded in 1829 is one of the world’s oldest departments. Dr. Morris played a key role in relaunching King’s Chemistry Department in 2012. Both the Department and its courses are growing robustly and adding a missing dimension to King’s research and education.

Dr. Morris has served on the MRC Neuroscience and Mental Health Board, the BBSRC BSEP group and DEFRA TSE Research Advisory Group. He has been recognized worldwide for his hard work and achievements.  He was named Outstanding Professional of the Year with Who's Who in 2014 & 2015 and recipient of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Prize.  He has published over 70 scientific papers, which have been cited more than 5,000 times to give him an H index of 40. He is interviewed regularly on the implications of research in neurodegeneration, and reviews grants and papers internationally on this subject. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Society of Biology, which expand the range of issues in which he engages.
