DR. DEEPAK CHOPRA RECEIVES HONORARY DEGREE FROM SOFIA UNIVERSITY

On June 25, 2016, Sofia University welcomed internationally renowned author, educator, and luminary Deepak Chopra, MD as commencement speaker for the graduating class of 2016. Dr. Chopra delivered Sofia University’s annual commencement address on the ceremony theme of “Envisioning the Future” to over 250 guests. In his speech, Dr. Chopra, referencing Sofia University’s foundation of transformation, spoke about love as the strongest element for transformation.

“Love is not just a mere sentiment. It’s not just a mere emotion, although that’s wonderful. But love is the ultimate truth at the heart of the universe. That kind of love will transform you and transform the rest of the world, or whoever you come into contact with - not because of what you say, not because of what you do, but because of your presence.”

The ceremony was followed by a reception for graduates and guests. Sofia University was pleased to welcome Dr. Chopra into the university community, not only as a commencement speaker, but as a recipient of an honorary degree from the university.

Dr. Chopra, who has gained international acclaim with his extensive experience in body mind medicine, wellness-based research, and spirituality, was chosen to receive an honorary degree by the Sofia University Board of Trustees and for his extensive research in these fields. Learning how to apply mind-body practices to client health and wellbeing is a foundational topic that students at Sofia University investigate from the perspective of the psychologist.

The focus on mind body well-being was a strong impetus for Sofia University president, Dr. Liz Li, when she chose to take the reigns of the university. The school’s commitment to fostering an excellent educational experience that embodies mind, body, and spirit was a powerful draw for the president who has seen how many people in technology fields seem out of balance or disconnected from happiness and joy. Dr. Li adds, “This is learning with authenticity, inclusivity, cultural humility, ecological stewardship, and service to others.”

Sofia University’s commencement ceremony was a celebration of these qualities, and the university community is proud to welcome Dr. Chopra as a steward of the values that Sofia University champions.
