Cheaper Ferry Prices to Sardinia’s Destinations in Italy in Summer 2016 According to Report

ROME, ITALY - 07/15/2016 (PRESS RELEASE JET)

This year Sardinia is again among the most desirable destinations for Summer holidays. If you are wondering how will be the prices in 2016, Silvia Cioni - Director of Traghettilines.it, the online booking centre to look up for ferry companies (www.ok-ferry.com is the English version) - replied that "the price of the ferry to Sardinia for the 2016 Summer is on a significant decrease compared to the previous seasons."

The Director’s statement is mirrored back and backed up by the Osservatorio Traghettilines’recent analysis.

This year the Osservatorio -an institution fully dedicated to the monitoring on the ferries’ price trend since many years- has focused his attention right on Sardinia which has always been among the top destination in the Mediterranean for the summer.

Working on the Livorno / Civitavecchia - Olbia return transit, the research showed that the average cost of ferry ticket has decreased by 25% -compared to 2014 data- and as much as 30% -compared to 2015 data. The overall analysis measured the results considering the standard ticket including 2 adults and 1or 2 children up to 12 years, car, cabin accommodation and travelling close to the mid-August peak period.

But what are the factors that contributed most to bring down ferry prices?

The increase in maritime offers ranks first. In fact, a greater number of ferry lines and destinations has effectively laid the groundwork for a greater diversification resulting in a consistent drop in prices.

Interestingly, Gian Mario Pileri, President of Fiavet Sardegna (the Italian Federation of Business Travel and Tourism and travel agents) states that “airplanes are too expensive" considering the same Sardinia’s destinations could be reached by ferry for much less money.

Flight prices have doubled and in some cases nearly tripled from the previous year. A substantially similar kind of context, i.e. the presence of increased competitiveness, didn’t help reduce prices in the air travel sector.

In fact, until last year Meridiana guaranteed the main routes to Sardinia (with flight connections from Bologna, Turin, Verona and Naples) at reduced rates, but the flight fares are now back on the free market. This new situation has triggered a price-increase mechanism with fares literally rocketed upwards.

You can save only by booking flights at rather uncomfortable times and travelling only with hand baggage.

In such a setting, the tourists will be better off booking a ferry to Sardinia, taking advantage of the sector’s positive trend!

And speaking of it, remember that it is not the first time a similar drop in ferry fares occurs. Even in the past, significant price decreasing was recorded as a result of aggressive advertising campaigns but it has always been limited in time.

With this in mind it is not difficult to imagine that the current reduction of the prices is not an event that will last over time; rather, it may be only limited to the summer season thanks to a larger number of companies and lines offering a ferry trip to a coveted destination such as Sardinia.
