Deltona Community Center Incorporates "Tilt-wall' Construction Technology

Construction began on the City of Deltona’s new multi-purpose community building, called The Center, after the official ground-breaking ceremony on January 26th. Progress in building the 29,000 square foot facility through the last 40 days has been notable. The contractor, Mulligan Constructors of Orlando, is using tilt-wall construction, which allows for a faster pace in completing a project.
The erection of the perimeter walls and internal load-bearing walls for The Center started the morning of March 22nd, and the construction crews were more than half-way finished with that phase by the end of the work day. This sets construction slightly ahead of schedule. The next major phase of construction for The Center will be the installation of “red iron”, or the steel roof support joists, some which span eighty feet in length. This portion of construction is scheduled to begin on Wednesday March 29th.
With tilt-wall technology, the building's walls are poured directly at the jobsite in large slabs of concrete called "tilt-wall panels". Crews assemble panel forms that act like a mold for the cement panels. Concrete is then poured into the forms to create the panels. Once the panels are solidified and the forms have been removed, the crew connects the first panel to a large crane with cables that hook into the inserts. The crew also attaches braces to the tilt-up panel and crane lifts, or "tilts up," the panel from the slab into a vertical position above the footings. Braces from the tilt-up panel are connected to the slab, the panel's embeds are attached to the footing, and the cables disconnected from the crane. The crew then moves to the next panel and repeats this process.
The architect firm CT Hsu & Associates designed the open concept facility, incorporating large expanses of glass with metal framing to allow for natural light illumination in the Lobby and Senior Hall. The Center also takes advantage of design concepts that allow the building incorporate “green” LEED technology in the future.
The Center’s design uses best practices for multi-audience functionality. There is a dedicated spacious area set aside to meet the needs of Deltona’s senior population, including a large dining space as well as a section set aside for games and leisure. The overall design keeps the rest of the Center, the banquet- presentation hall and meeting rooms, separate from the Senior Hall, and as a result the Center can be the site of events while not interrupting the daily activities of the senior visitors. The Center will also have a landscaped lawn area set aside for outside events.
The Center is located on the Howland Crossing business park, on Martin Luther King Avenue, and the ribbon-cutting is planned for December 2017.
