$2,500,000 Verdict Against Brooklyn’s 9th Worst Landlord

A Bronx Supreme court jury issued a verdict today awarding $2,500,000 to James Register who tripped over a 2 inch rise in the sidewalk in front of 1890 Lexington Ave in Manhattan.  Mr. Register tripped over the defect and as a result, he suffered a concussion with traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures to his nose.   

The defendants, KNW Apartment, LLC and Urban American Management, LLC, had actual knowledge of the defect as New York City issued a violation against them for the same defect three years prior to this incident. Another victim tripped over the same defect a year prior to Mr. Register and was also injured. When the defendants received an estimate to repair the defect in the amount of $18,000, they chose to ignore it, ultimately causing plaintiff to sustain severe permanent injuries.

The defendants are one of the largest landlords in the City and were ranked the 9th worst landlord in Kings County. Based on an article published on the NYC Tenant Advocate Website and filed under Slumlord Millionaires "According to Public Advocate Bill DeBlasio's Worst Landlord Watchlist…Josh Eisenberg is the 9th worst landlord in Brooklyn and the 85th worst in the five boroughs...Eisenberg was listed as Urban American Management's Head Officer (as of April, 2011).” (https://nyctenantadvocate.wordpress.com/is-urban-american-nycs-worst-landlord/) "The criteria (for the Public Advocate's Worst Landlords list) put landlord Joshua Eisenberg of Urban American on the list in 2011 after 1 St. Paul’s Ct. in Brooklyn racked up 268 code violations."
